Partial Limb Prosthesis for Dogs

Custom-designed prosthetic devices for dogs with partial limb loss, restoring functional weight-bearing while preserving remaining anatomy.

Partial limb prostheses are veterinary prosthetic devices designed for dogs who have lost only a distal portion of a limb, such as part of the paw or lower limb segment.
Unlike full limb prostheses, partial prostheses work with the remaining limb structure, making precise biomechanical design and fitting essential for success.

Clinical Indications for a Partial Prosthesis

A partial limb prosthesis may be indicated when:

  • a distal part of the limb is missing (e.g. paw or distal limb segment)

  • the remaining limb segment is structurally stable

  • weight-bearing through the residual limb is possible

  • preservation of joint function is clinically desirable

  • full limb amputation is not indicated or not preferred

Proper case selection is critical.
Not every partial amputation is suitable for a partial prosthesis.

Purpose of partial limb prostheses

The purpose of our partial limb prostheses is to provide targeted biomechanical support for dogs affected by injury, congenital deformity, or partial limb loss. These devices are designed to work in combination with the remaining limb structures, allowing functional mobility while supporting proper load distribution within the musculoskeletal system.

Each prosthesis is individually fitted based on a detailed assessment of the affected limb, including anatomical shape, soft tissue condition, and functional movement. Precise fitting ensures comfort, stability, and effective integration into the dog's natural gait.

By supporting controlled and symmetrical movement, a partial prosthesis can help reduce compensatory overload of other limbs and joints, minimizing the risk of secondary musculoskeletal strain associated with uneven weight bearing.

The overall goal is to improve functional mobility, comfort, and long-term musculoskeletal health, enabling dogs to maintain an active and balanced quality of life appropriate to their individual condition.

Who Is a Partial Limb Prosthesis Intended For?

Partial limb prostheses are designed for dogs in situations where targeted biomechanical support can improve functional mobility and load distribution. They may be considered in the following cases:

  • support for a partially weight-bearing limb

  • assistance with postural alignment to reduce abnormal loading of joints

  • correction of gait asymmetries and irregular movement patterns

  • compensation for limb length discrepancies

  • support for increased physical activity and functional endurance

  • improvement of overall comfort and quality of life

Each case is individually assessed to determine whether a partial prosthetic solution is clinically appropriate and beneficial.

Why Partial Prostheses Require Advanced Expertise

Unlike full limb prostheses, partial prosthetic devices:

  • must interface directly with load-bearing soft tissue and bone

  • require precise alignment with existing joints

  • demand careful pressure distribution to prevent skin breakdown

  • must accommodate dynamic movement during stance and gait

This makes partial prostheses one of the most technically demanding prosthetic solutions in veterinary medicine.

Custom Partial Prosthetic Design — Case by Case

Each partial prosthesis is individually developed based on:

  • detailed assessment of the residual limb

  • soft tissue condition and tolerance

  • joint alignment and range of motion

  • gait analysis and weight distribution

  • activity level and long-term functional goals

No standardized designs are used.
Each device is created as a case-specific biomechanical solution, reflecting our experience with complex prosthetic cases.

  • Is a partial prosthesis suitable for my dog?

Not every amputation allows for the use of a partial prosthesis. In our illustration, you can see from which height and position of the amputation we are able to make a prosthesis that is truly functional and helps your dog walk comfortably and without pain again.

If the amputation is too high on the limb, a partial prosthesis may be less effective, and we recommend considering other options. However, we assess each case individually – feel free to contact us, we'll be happy to discuss what is best for your dog.

Stories that have the power to inspire

The story of a young vippet who lost part of his front leg due to an accident. This dog is very lucky to have such great owners, including the vet who tried her best to save the leg as much as she could. Thank you to the owners and the vet for their trust!

We made a partial prosthesis for Kaira's hind leg. Kaira lost part of her back leg also due to an accident - a collision with a car. Here we appreciate very much the approach of the veterinarian who contacted us before the amputation to consult us on how to shorten the limb so that she could have a chance for a normal life with the prosthesis.
